Designing a Learning Academy for a Defence Manufacturer
The client manufactures explosives and energetic materials for industrial and defence customers in Europe, and its defence business has been growing quickly. Growth in that market arrives attached to obligations: customers write quality assurance standards into contracts, and auditors ask for evidence that the people doing the work are competent to do it.
The problem
The training to meet those obligations existed, but it had been bought course by course over years by whoever needed it at the time, and nobody owned it as a whole. There was no way to state what every employee should know, no way to evidence it to a customer, and no way to absorb a new contractual requirement without starting procurement again from the beginning.
What the sprint set out to do
Define the essential skills every employee needs and the additional skills each job family needs on top. Scan the e-learning market and evaluate every provider against the same six criteria, including whether completion can be tracked well enough to satisfy an auditor. Structure the academy into mandatory essentials, leadership skills and functional skills. Model the total investment and set an implementation roadmap with named workstreams, owners and dates.
