Problem Summary

WoodCo lacked a consolidated view of how its raw material products aligned with leading green building certifications across regions. Documentation gaps, unclear compliance thresholds, and fragmented certification strategies hindered its ability to support customers pursuing sustainable construction. Without a structured approach, the company risked losing market relevance and missing opportunities to differentiate through sustainability leadership.

Situation

WoodCo, a global supplier of engineered wood products, operated across key European and North American markets with limited visibility into how its materials aligned with evolving green building certifications. While the company held strong credentials in sourcing and environmental declarations, certification requirements varied widely by region and were often unclear. Faced with increasing customer expectations and regulatory complexity, WoodCo engaged SprintlyWorks to evaluate current compliance, identify documentation gaps, and develop a strategic roadmap to enhance its sustainability positioning in new construction projects.

Key Research Question

The key question driving the project was:

  • What are the certification requirements directly related to raw materials for each standard?

  • What documentation is needed to fulfill these certification requirements?

  • How can WoodCo leverage its products to maximize certification points for customers?

Our Approach

SprintlyWorks adopted a three-phase approach to help WoodCo benchmark its engineered wood products against international green building certifications and identify strategic compliance improvements.

  1. Diagnose Certification Landscape:

We reviewed 12 major green building certifications across 10 countries, including LEED, BREEAM, and DGNB. Using source documents and national adaptations, we identified 82 criteria and 94 referenced standards across six sustainability categories (sourcing, environmental declarations, air quality, ingredient transparency, circularity, and comfort attributes). These were mapped against WoodCo’s existing documentation, enabling a structured gap assessment.

  1. Benchmark Current Compliance:

Each criterion was evaluated based on certification relevance, scoring impact, and feasibility. We benchmarked WoodCo’s flagship product across all categories, revealing strong performance in sourcing and EPD, moderate alignment in air quality, circularity and ingredient transparency. We then conducted root-cause analysis to understand which improvements required new testing, certifications, or product adjustments.

  1. Build Roadmap and Tools:

We delivered a compliance playbook detailing immediate and long-term actions by category and region. Recommendations included reducing formaldehyde emissions to meet some of the strict certification’s thresholds, obtaining test results, and pursuing certifications like Cradle to Cradle and Blue Angel. A prioritization framework was introduced based on cost-benefit analysis and certification influence. An Excel-based tool was also developed to help internal teams track compliance dynamically.

This approach provided WoodCo with a clear and actionable roadmap to elevate its sustainability credentials and better support green building projects across priority markets.

Results

The project enabled WoodCo to transition from ad hoc sustainability alignment to a structured certification compliance strategy. The benchmark revealed high performance in sourcing and EPD, while identifying key improvement areas in air quality, material transparency, and circularity. SprintlyWorks’ roadmap provided targeted actions to close these gaps through additional testing and documentation. The final playbook and compliance tracker now serve as the foundation for WoodCo’s certification strategy, helping teams respond to customer requirements more effectively and positioning the company as a proactive partner in sustainable construction.
